history

The Fries Verzetsmuseum has been informing and educating people about the story of Friesland during the Second World War since 1979. The first exhibition in the same year focused on Frisian resistance, taking the traditional mindset of good and evil as its theme. This mindset was finally shattered in 1983 through various exhibitions, which created a more nuanced perspective.

In 1995 the museum moved to the historic building ‘de Kanselarij’. A modern exhibition with the theme ‘Kiezen Toen & Nu’ (‘Choices: Then & Now’) showed that the German occupation was not as straightforward and clear-cut as is generally presumed.
